 How Generators and Batteries Interact Generators provide AC power, while batteries store DC power. So, on their own, most generators do not directly charge batteries.  However, generators can be used to power battery chargers which then charge your batteries.  Some larger generators also have DC power outputs specifically intended for recharging 12V, 24V or 48V battery banks. Power Essentials A 4000-watt generator can power the essentials in your home during a power outage.  It can run things like refrigerators, fans, laptops, and basic lighting. As long as you manage the load, a 4,000-watt portable generator can keep your most important appliances and devices powered on. Limited High-Wattage Items With caution, you can periodically run some higher wattage items with a 4,000-watt generator for limited periods.  Things like power tools, hair dryers, microwaves and pumps may work for temporary usage. Make sure not to overload the generator by running multiple high-wattage items at once.  Also, avoid running anything continuously that is over 50-75% of the maximum wattage of your generator.
